The State of Iowa's medical insurance plans offers you quality, comprehensive and flexible coverage to meet the medical needs of you and your family.

Life Insurance

The State of Iowa's life insurance coverage provides financial protection to your family in case of your death plus the opportunity to purchase supplemental term life coverage at affordable group rates.

Long Term Disability Insurance

The State of Iowa's long term disability insurance provides a portion of your income if you are off work due to an extended period of disability.


Domestic Partner Benefits

The State of Iowa offers its non-contract employees and employees represented by AFSCME, PPME and UE/IUP the ability to enroll their same sex or opposite sex domestic partner in their state employee health and/or dental insurance.

Duplicate Coverage

An employee cannot be covered as both an employee and a dependent under the State’s health and dental insurance plans.

Tax Treatment of Non-Qualified Tax Dependents

There are no tax consequences for enrolling your opposite-sex spouse and dependent children through age 26 in health and dental coverage. However, there may be tax consequences if you enroll one of the following dependents in your health and dental insurance.

  • Dependent Child who is an unmarried full-time student over the age of 26
  • Domestic Partner
  • Same-Sex Spouse
